2. Find your Target Audience 


Defining and not defining your target audience can be the difference between having a successful social media campaign or a money guzzling dud that makes you vow away all things social media.

Think hard about your target audience. Who are they? What do they do? Where do they stay? Why would they buy your product or take your service? What interests them?

This research, and ideally, buyer personas created based on this research can help you target your potential leads and customers, and only them.Without an understanding of your target audience, there can't be a strategy, any strategy.

3. Research The Competition 


Every business has competition. Even disruptive startups. Check them out. What is their online footprint? What channels are they using? How are they structuring their content? Is their messaging effective?

The purpose of this competitor research is not to blindly follow them. It is to understand what they are doing well, and where they are failing; using this understanding to sharpen and polish the content strategy and social media strategy. It is an essential part of differentiating your business from your competitor's.

4. Shortlist Social Media Platforms 


Social media offers many platforms to choose from - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Youtube, Foursquare, and the silently powerful Google Plus. It is almost impossible for a business to have a powerful presence on all the available social media platforms. Not just that, it is also impractical and a waste of money and resources.

While setting the social media strategy of a business, one should match the requirements of the business to that of the opportunities available on a social media platform. The business criterion includes brand image, product and goal requirements. Analyze the social media on the basis of the kind of tools that it offers, the nature of interactions that take place on that platform, and the mindset of the users when they are using the social media platform.

5. Create Content For Various Media and Devices  


Now that the research is done and social media platforms are shortlisted, it's time to create customized content for each of the channels. Each social media platform is different, and the content needs to be tailored to what works best on that platform. We also have to make the content accessible on all kinds of devices, including smartphones and tablets. This means finding the balance between detail and description; finding that sweet spot where the reader is told enough to take the desired action, but not so much that he/she gets bored and skips to the next interesting update.
